So far in MySQL, there are some releases of versions which has different features added to them along with the constant version changes during the release each one is stable and has the obvious bugs which will be fixed accordingly in the next release. These versions vary with numbers identifying the unique aspects of the version releases and the features added to them.

The latest version of MySQL includes version 5.8 which contained all the essential features and contains the release history from 8.0 to 8.0.21 which is available from April of 2018 and ends support by April of 2026.

There are two distributions in MySQL general availability and development release.

The dev release contains the most and newest of all features but is not suitable for production whereas the general availability which is also commonly called a production release or stable release is the one that is mainly used up for production.

Release History:

  • 5.1 Release -> General Availability (14 Nov 2008; 12 years ago) -> Latest Version (5.1.73) -> Latest Release (2013-12-03) -> End Of Support (December 2013)

Version 6 never happened because of the sun microsystems acquisition during that time and also 7 didn't happen too because of MySQL cluster usage of version 7. These scenarios made the giant leap to version 8 as the major version for MySQL.
